Share text between Mac and Omarchy

Share a piece of text to a host you choose, then retrieve it on a paired device. Fab shares only the text you send. Sharing does not paste into another app or continuously sync your clipboard.

Availability: Shared text requires a build with the clip commands on each device. The public Omarchy 0.1.0 package does not include them. This guide covers the shared-text preview; check fab-linux clip --help before continuing on Omarchy.

You need: Fab running on both devices · Shared-text support on both devices · A reachable storage host

  1. Step 01 of 8

    Check shared-text support

On Omarchy, run fab-linux clip --help. On Mac, open the paster with Control+Option+V and look for the Shared lane. If the command or lane is missing, use a build that includes shared text before continuing. Installing Omarchy 0.1.0 alone does not enable this workflow.

  2. Step 02 of 8

    Pair the devices

On the Mac, open Settings → Hush and turn Hush on so the paired link can run. On Omarchy, run fab-linux peers to find the Mac, then pair with its listed name. Compare the four words shown on both devices and confirm on both only if they match. Replace My Mac in the example with your Mac’s name. Pairing requires reachability; a saved pairing alone does not mean the other device is connected.

    fab-linux pair "My Mac"
  3. Step 03 of 8

Choose one storage host on the Mac

    ⌃⌥V

Press Control+Option+V. If Here is open, press Tab to switch to Shared. Under Kept on, choose this Mac for the first test. This is the storage host that will keep the text. Keep Fab running and the Mac awake while the other device retrieves it.

  4. Step 04 of 8

Select that same host on Omarchy

Run fab-linux clip hosts --json to find the Mac’s name or ID. Select it with clip host. Run clip refresh to enable shared text on this device and fetch the host’s list. If the host is absent or unavailable, open Shared on the Mac and check the paired connection before retrying.

fab-linux clip host "My Mac" --json
    fab-linux clip refresh --json
  5. Step 05 of 8

Share a small piece of text from the Mac

    0

Copy a short piece of text you want to send. Open the paster and press 0. Fab shares that clipboard text to the selected storage host and opens Shared. Wait for “Available on…” to name the storage host; CLI receipts call this stored. Pending means it is queued on the sending device and is not yet available from the storage host.

  6. Step 06 of 8

    Retrieve the text on Omarchy

Run clip refresh to fetch the latest list, then clip list to find the stored item’s ID. Replace ITEM_ID below with that ID. clip get writes the full text to the terminal without changing the desktop clipboard. To copy it instead, save it to a new file and copy only after retrieval succeeds, as shown below. Choose a file path you are happy to write. Then paste in your chosen app with Ctrl+V or Ctrl+Shift+V in a terminal.

    fab-linux clip refresh --json
    fab-linux clip list --json
    fab-linux clip get ITEM_ID
    # To save and copy only after a successful retrieval:
    fab-linux clip get ITEM_ID > ./shared-note.txt && wl-copy < ./shared-note.txt
  7. Step 07 of 8

    Send text back from Omarchy

Share a UTF-8 text file with the command below, replacing ./note.txt with your file. Check the receipt for stored before retrieving it on the Mac. The Linux command accepts text, files or piped input; it does not read the desktop clipboard by itself.

fab-linux clip share --file ./note.txt --json
  8. Step 08 of 8

Paste the shared item on the Mac

    ⌃⌥V

Click the text box where it should go. Open the paster and switch to Shared with Tab if Here is open. Check Kept on still names the same storage host. Press the item’s number to paste, or use Shift plus its number to copy without pasting. Enter pastes the selected item; Shift+Enter copies it. Pending items cannot be pasted.

Tips

  • Stored means the chosen host acknowledged saving the text. It does not mean another device has read or pasted it.
  • Pending stays on the sending device for retry. Restore the connection and use clip refresh. If a share times out, inspect clip list before retrying with the same item ID using --id; avoid creating duplicate shares.
  • An offline list can show cached previews. Retrieving full text still needs the storage host. Use clip status --json to check the selected host and clip refresh --json to retry.
  • Here and Shared use Shift differently on Mac: Here pastes a file path; Shared copies text without pasting.
  • The shelf holds plain UTF-8 text, up to 256 KiB per item, with at most 50 stored items and a seven-day expiry. Keep a separate copy of anything you need long term.
  • Images and files are not transferred by shared text. Sharing a file path sends its characters; it does not copy the file to another computer.

Questions

Does pairing sync everything I copy?
No. Shared text is explicit. On Mac, 0 shares the clipboard text you selected. On Omarchy, clip share sends only the text, file contents or piped input you give it.
Can a remote share paste into the app I am using?
Sharing alone never pastes. The receiving user retrieves or selects an item, then chooses to copy or paste it. Remote dictation and remote keyboard control are separate features.
Can I use two Macs instead?
Yes, with shared-text support on both. Pair them in Settings → Hush, open Shared on each, and select the same Kept on host. Use 0 to share and a number to paste.
Why is the item missing on the other device?
Check that both devices selected the same storage host and that the share is stored. Keep the storage host awake with Fab running. Refresh after reconnecting. Items also expire after seven days and can be removed as the shelf fills.
What happens to private clipboard text?
The Mac clipboard action refuses text marked private by the source app. Explicit file or terminal input is the content you chose to share. Only send text intended for your paired devices.
