Pair your devices

Start with two devices, compare the four words, and confirm on both. Once they’re paired, you can choose how to use them together.

You need: Fab installed and running on each device · At least one Mac: this guide covers Mac–Mac and Mac–Omarchy pairing · Devices awake and on the same network for this walkthrough

  1. Step 01 of 6

    Open Hush on your Mac

Open Fab Settings → Hush and turn Hush on. For two Macs, do this on both. Hush uses the paired connection to quiet other Macs while you dictate; review its Level and Hard mute settings before your next take.

  2. Step 02 of 6

    Choose the other device

For two Macs, find the other Mac under Nearby and click Pair… on one Mac. To pair Omarchy with a Mac, run the commands below on Omarchy. Replace My Mac with the name shown by peers.

    fab-linux peers
    fab-linux pair "My Mac"
  3. Step 03 of 6

    Compare the four words

Read the words on both devices. On a Mac, the pairing card appears in Hush or at the notch. On Omarchy, follow the terminal prompt. Confirm on both devices only when all four words match. If they differ or the device is not yours, cancel the pairing.

  4. Step 04 of 6

    Check the connection

Wait for the paired confirmation. On Mac, find the device under Your Macs and check its connection status. On Omarchy, run peers again. A remembered pairing can still be offline: keep both devices awake with Fab running before trying a shared workflow.

  5. Step 05 of 6

    Add another device

Repeat with the next device. For several Macs, check Introductions in Hush. When Introduce new Macs to the others is on, a paired Mac can introduce the new Mac to the rest. With it off, pair each Mac directly with the others you want to connect. For Omarchy, check peers and pair with each Mac you want to use if it is not already paired.

  6. Step 06 of 6

    Choose what to do together

Pairing establishes the connection. It does not continuously copy your clipboard. On Omarchy, check Talk through in Settings before your next dictation and choose This machine if you want to record locally. To send a piece of text, follow the sharing guide and check its version requirements first.

Tips

  • Give devices recognizable names so you can tell which one you are choosing.
  • If a device is missing, check that Fab is running, the device is awake, and both devices can reach each other on the network.
  • If Fab reports that a device’s identity changed, confirm that it is your device before pairing again.

Questions

Do I need to pair devices for local dictation?
No. Mac and Omarchy can each record and transcribe locally. Pair when you want to use connected features.
Can I pair more than two devices?
Yes. Add each device and check the connections you need. The Mac Introductions setting controls whether your Macs introduce newly paired Macs to the others.
How do I remove a device?
On Mac, open Hush, find the device under Your Macs, and choose Forget…. Read the choice between forgetting it on this Mac and on all your Macs. On Omarchy, fab-linux unpair followed by the peer’s name removes that pairing on the Omarchy machine.
Is pairing the same as sharing text?
No. Pairing connects the devices. Sharing is a separate action that sends the text you choose to a storage host. The sharing guide lists the builds that support it.
